Following
the precepts of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle- that one
can know the velocity
or the location of a particle, but
not both at the same time; and that observation changes the experiment-
here’s what I can tell you about myself right now: I started
out as a glassblower, then a weaver, then I worked for 20 years
as an advertising pre-production illustrator, and since 1998, I
have been doing editorial illustration for a wide variety of clients.
I have illustrated for the New York Times Book Review, Cricket
Magazine, The New York Folklore Society, among other magazines
and projects. I am working in a style based on the ideas of paper
dolls, distressed surfaces and human and animal figures. All of
these and a love of language come together in The Word Project,
a few pieces of which are presented here.
I also run workshops on making concrete garden projects; organize
and participate in the Copyright Forum, an occassional feature
on WAMC, Northeast Public Radio’s call-n program, VoxPop;
design web sites here and there; and design and produce commissioned
interiors accessories.
My studio, the Thrums End Art Studio, was established in “Friendly,
Historic Saugerties,” New York in 1993. That’s it for
position; velocity- well, that’s another
matter.
Words-of-Wisdom
I have no tips on how to be successful in the Illustration business
other than don’t give up.
Find something you love to do and do it (or several things and
do them all.) As per my motto: Insolitores res Contiguerunt- (Stranger
Things Have Happened)
My website is www.thrumsend.com, the virtual door is always open.
